  • Library Director Job Summary
  • The Library Director is responsible for supervising all library operations, which includes representing the library in the community, as well as maintaining relations with the Indiana State Library and the Carroll County Library community. The director is responsible for developing library programs, maintaining the library collection, assisting library patrons with both reference and Internet questions, and managing the library staff and volunteers. The director is also responsible for working with the Library Board to develop long range plans, prepare and administer the budget, and attend monthly Library Board meetings.

  • Evaluates all aspects of the library’s service so as to provide library patrons resources to aid their education, provide information, and enhance the quality of their leisure time
  • Recommends the hiring of qualified library personnel candidates to the Library Board
  • Recruits, trains, schedules, supervises, and evaluates library staff and volunteers
  • Treats all library patrons, staff, and volunteers in a courteous and helpful manner
  • Maintains employee records
  • Shares daily circulation duties
  • Provides reference service via phone, email, and in writing
  • Plans, schedules, and promotes library events
  • Maintains the library website
  • Selects and acquires materials in all formats in accordance with the library’s collection development policy
  • Catalogs and classifies library materials, in accordance to Evergreen Indiana standards
  • Manages collection maintenance, including determining materials to be discarded
  • Evaluates library technology needs and brings them to the attention of the Library Board
  • Monitors the library’s compliance with state law and regulations
  • Prepares annual reports for the State Library and the State Board of Accounts
  • Orders supplies and equipment
  • Solicits, accepts, and acknowledges gifts to the library on behalf of the trustees
  • Applies for grant money to further the library’s goals as appropriate
  • Performs other duties as directed by the Library Board of Trustees
  • Qualifications
  • Must have a four year college degree, or be able to qualify for Librarian Certificate 4 (LC4) within six months of hire
  • Must be comfortable working on computers, answering email, and preparing Word documents
  • Must be willing to travel to Indianapolis for Evergreen and other training required by the State Library
  • Must be willing to work some weekend hours
  • Must be able to carry heavy armloads of books, walk frequently up and down flights of stairs during any assigned work shift, and reach all shelves, which may include the aid of a stepstool
  • Must be willing to attend community and library-business related meetings outside of regular library hours
